How to prevent illegal trade with wood from protected tree species?
The Thünen Centre of Competence on the Origin of Timber helps to regulate timber trade with its expertise when it for example comes to
- excessive exploitation of economically important tropical tree species
- increasing imports of so-called “lesser known substitute species”
- trade in timber from CITES-protected tree species
Here, the Centre of Competence constitutes a contact facility for governmental institutions and agencies in order to specify the origin and species of the wood or wood product to trade. These specifications all underly the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR) that is implied since March the 3rd, 2013.
The experts at the Thünen Centre of Competence cooperate internationally with other scientific facilities and are developing partnerships in the appropriate countries.
